Founded by the Spanish in 1524, Granada is considered one of the oldest colonial cities in the Western Hemisphere. Now a museum, the monastery is home to an impressive collection of pre -Columbian art. Keep up the beautiful Iglesia de la Merced, where you have the opportunity to climb to the top of the bell tower and enjoy the spectacular views of the city, the Lake Nicaragua and Mombacho Volcano. Then we go to the fortress The Gunpowder to know the history of the place. End your journey in the oldest part of the city where you will visit the Church Xalteva, and ancient walls.

Cerro Negro Volcano, Hervideros de San Jacinto Tour, Leon Viejo and Leon City.

The city of León is a cultural-historical attraction that really deserves a visit as well.

Another great attraction in the area is the massive chain of active and dormant volcanoes that stretch northwest from the Lake Xolotlán to the Gulf of Fonseca (border Honduras/El Salvador).A tour to one of the youngest and most active volcanoes of Nicaragua, the Cerro Negro, is a must-do. The volcano, covered with black volcanic debris, is quite easy to climb, and it is a marvelous experience: in a ski-like manner you descend the steep slope. For a bit more adventure, you can even try volcano boarding down the Cerro Negro as well.

Climbing to the top of the Cerro Negro is an impressive experience, and the climb is surprisingly easy. This active volcano, the youngest in the Western Hemisphere and one of the most accessible in Nicaragua (altitude 675 m.), is totally covered with black sand and rock. From the top, you will have an incredible view of the surrounding area and the Maribios volcanic chain, however the descent is probably the most fun.

Once you have had your fill of the view from the top, descend the steep slope by foot, using the sandy volcanic material to control your speed. Hiking or sports shoes are strongly recommended. An interesting fact is that Frenchman Eric Barone broke the world speed record by descending the slope of the Cerro Negro by mountain bike!

Here you can buy all the souvenirs for your family and friends when you return home. Stop here and take a break for lunch at Catarina and enjoy the spectacular view of the volcano-Lake Apoyo.

Maderas Volcano Climb

You will start the climb of the Maderas, with its exorbitant flora & fauna. The climb starts off quite steep, but the trail is in good condition. The climb is hard and a good condition is required, but the reward is also there: white-faced and howler monkeys are clearly present in the dense forest and abundant flora & fauna will keep you motivated. If weather conditions are rainy, the climb will be even more challenging.

After a tough climb you will reach the top and the mystic crater lake, where you can descend into as well, using some ropes. We recommend to bring about 3 liters of water and good hiking shoes.

Conception Volcano Climb

Early in the morning you will head for the foot of this impressive active volcano. From Urbaite, you will start climbing, passing coffee and banana plantations. Stunning nature and great views can be expected on the way up, but be prepared for a tough day of climbing.

After passing the treeline, the sun can be overwhelming, but the views get even better. It will be necessary to climb over rocks for the last bit, because the trail is rather rough there.

And, if you are lucky, the sky is clear at the top and views are superb. Seeing sulfur smoke getting up from the crater is a simply magnificent and satisfactory thrill.

Bring along at least 3 liters of water and some good hiking shoes. If the challenge is a bit too much, it is also possible to do the climb half-way, still an unforgettable experience.

Turtles Watching Tours

Sea Turtles-Watching Tour (La Flor Beach-Wildlife Reserve)

The most famous beach south of San Juan del Sur is the La Flor beach. This beach is a protected wildlife reserve because of the vast arrival of Olive Ridley turtles during massive arrivals that take place every year between August and January. Thousands of turtles arrive during certain nights to lay eggs at this one specific beach. About 50 days later, hundreds of thousands of eggs hatch and the baby turtles try to make their way to the ocean. Both truly unique events, the egg-laying and the hatching, can be seen at the La Flor beach. You will be told if the turtle activity is worthwhile and will be transferred to La Flor beach to witness the event.
